THANK YOU FROM THE BENDIK FAMILY (posted Friday, May 19, 2006)
Our Great Strides walks for 2006 are over! Donations continue to come in and be counted but as of Saturday Team Gavin had raised about $17,000!!! We continue to be amazed by the support of our family and friends. You all give us reason to believe that Gavin will live a long and healthy life. Thanks so much to each of you for walking with us in New York and Atlanta, fundraising for our team, and donating to this cause.

Just want to acknowledge a few people who did a little something extra to make that staggering total possible:
  • Tricia Bendik for organizing Team Gavin NY
  • Mandy Robinson for the design and photo on our wonderful t-shirt. She's such a talented photographer so please check out her website - http://www.mandyrobinson.com/
  • Design Enterprises for donating our Atlanta shirts
  • Lorna Smith for coordinating the New York t-shirts
  • Christina, Jake, and the Holloway Family for hosting a party to raise donations
  • The RJ Griffin gang for their amazing support once again this year
  • Bob Bartlett and his coworkers at McKenna, Long & Aldridge
  • The Harrison High School and CobbFC soccer communities
Our Love...Nikki, Toby, Sebastian and Gavin

ROUND 5: WOMEN'S GREAT EFFORT NOT ENOUGH (posted Sunday, May 14, 2006)
The weather was great, the crowd was great (over 1,000), but so was Starr's Mill. They came out strong from the start, especially with their powerhouse player, Kelly O. Starr's Mill posted the game's first goal with 29:30 in the first half and Harrison held them at 1-0 to the half-time break. The Lady Hoyas came out strong at the start of the second half, and at the 38:34 mark...just under two minutes after the start of the half, Michelle B. made a cross to Jamie P. who headed it into the goal. The Ladies held the 1-1 score for quite a while playing almost evenly on both sides of the field. However, Starr's Mill scored two more goals in the last 15 minutes of play to win, 3-1.

ROUND 5: MEN PUT IN GREAT EFFORT (posted Friday, May 12, 2006)
In front of a crowd of over 2,200 the men's varsity soccer team played great, but it wasn't enough to win the Georgia High School Association State tournament. It was a game of disappointment. Within the first two minutes of the first half, a goal was made, but called back by the linesman call of off sides. Within minutes, another goal, a header by Austin S. was made, but again called back by the linesman.Later in the first half, Walton scored a goal. Amazingly, the linesman did not call that one back. Walton held Harrison through the rest of the game.

ROUND 4: VARSITY WOMEN KEEP PACE WITH THE MEN! (posted Wednesday, May 10, 2006)
A sign seen being waved around (thanks Rachel B.!) at tonight's game stated, "Green and Blue is better than New(nan)!" And how true that was. As predicted, it rained most of the day with intermittent thunder and lighting. But, at kick off time, it had stopped raining and by midgame the skies were clear. Was it a possible sign of great things to come? Newnan made a strong start and scored within the first seven mninutes of the game. The parents were very tense as they realized that it was at the semi-finals last year, that the Lady Hoyas were eliminated. However, the girls, perhaps a little nervous at the start, pressed hard to maintain control of the ball for a good portion of the game and were rewarded with 10 minutes left to first-half play when Kelly C. made a goal leading to a 1-1 tie at half-time. At the start of the second half, many of the girls had smiles on their faces as they walked on to the field. The girls kept moving the ball forward and getting shots on goal. One after another...just wide, stopped by the goalie, too high. But at 28:30 minutes into the second half the team got lucky and another of Jamie P.'s famous headers made it into the goal! Holding on tight, the Lady Hoyas held Newnan back and won the match 2-1! Watch the video here with the "goal that got away." More pictures and video clips coming soon.

ROUND 4: VARSITY MEN MOVE ON TO FINALS! (posted Tuesday, May 9, 2006)
Putting in a stunning performance, the men's team ruled the evening with an easy 5-0 win over Duluth for Round 4: Semi-Finals. At approximately 17 minutes into the game, Austin S. scored Harrison's first goal of the evening. With less than 6 minutes left in the game, Michael H. scored. Barely 5 minutes into the second half, Austin S. did a repeat of the first half to again add 1 more goal to the Harrison scoreboard. AJ posted the fourth goal at 23:42 into the half with Kevin Meyer wrapping up a strong finish with a goal with just over 7 minutes left to the match.

ROUND 3: VARSITY WOMEN WIN! (posted Saturday, May 6, 2006)
Not to be outdone by the men, the Lady Hoyas won their 3rd round play off game against Fayette Co. With a great goalie and players doubling up on the defense, Allison S. scored one goal in the first half of the match. Both teams held fast during the second half. The Lady Hoyas won the game, 1-0.More pictures and video clips are now posted on the Women's Photo Gallery!

NORTH GWINNETT DAD TAKES PHOTOS OF WEDNESDAY NIGHT'S LADIES GAME (posted Friday, May 5, 2006)
Craig Cappy, father of a N. Gwinnett soccer player that graduated last year and photographer, was at Wednesday night's game. Craig captured almost 100 REALLY great photos of our players (I took a peek). These can be viewed (and purchased) at his website www.craigcappy.com. Once at his site, click on 2006 North Gwinnett Soccer, then on 050306_Ng_wsoccer_Harrison.

ROUND 3: VARSITY MEN WIN! (posted Saturday, May 6, 2006)
The men easily took the lead with the first goal scored by Austin S. approximately 9 minutes in the first half. About 6 minutes later, Randy S. posted another goal. Not to be outdone so early in the game, Houston Co. drove hard to score their first goal not a quite a minute after Harrison's. Both teams held till the half time with Harrison ahead, 2-1. Early in the second half, two more Harrison goals were made: one by Alex J. at the 35:36 mark of the clock and one about four minutes later by Austin S. With a lot of frustration, the Houston Co. team played hard to come back, but the Hoya's held, ending the game with a score of 4-1. Pictures & more videos now posted in the Men's Photo Gallery!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY PLAYOFF GAME! (posted Saturday, May 6, 2006)
Volunteers...either JV or V parents...are needed to work the concession stands for the upcoming Round 4 Semi-FInals home games. Times to be determined. Please call Pam Steele at 770-425-9280. Thank you in advance!

ROUND 2: MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TEAM BOTH WIN! The Hoya varsity soccer teams "keep on, keeping on!" Both the men and women took round 2 against the competition. Tuesday night's men's game saw a large crowd of fans from both schools. The Centennial Knights were very vocal in their enthusiasm and support of their players and may have partly accounted for the strong show of play and led them to a quick 2-0 lead. However, the Hoya men found their stride and came back from this deficit to win the match 3-2!

The Lady Hoyas also had a slow start with N. Gwinnett posting the first score of the game in the first half. However, in the second half the Hoyas had some luck when a strong Harrison cross deflected off the foot of a N. Gwinnett player's foot and scored a goal. This re-energized the Ladies and a score was made on a Jamie P. header, winning the game, 2-1.

Pictures of these games will be coming soon so keep posted.

INSPIRATION Tuesday night's men's game was extreme...extremely tense, extremely fought, extremely won. I left the game extremely hoarse, having joined all the parents cheering our men to victory! And, as so often happens to parents, I had to miss the ladies' game the next evening because of an out-of-town meeting. My flight back to Atlanta left at 7:59p giving me just enough time to call and wish success to my daughter and the team. Thoughts about the game (Anyone score yet? Is it halftime? Anyone get hurt?) the whole flight back. We landed at 9:20p and as soon as the plane's wheels hit the tarmac, I got my cell phone out again and called in for the report. I startled the nearby passengers as I yelped out a "Yes!" hearing that the Lady Hoya's had won, 2-1. Later, when I got home and dropped by computer bag on my desk, I saw a small, bright green book on my desk called, The Spice of Life which was a compilation of wit and wisdom by (can you believe it) Dian Ritter (not this one!). Glancing through it, I found the following that I thought appropriate as we move to Round 3 of playoffs.

"Obstacles are those frightening things that you see when you take your eyes off the goal."

If you think you are beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you like to win, but you think you can't,
It is almost certain you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you've lost
For out of the world we find,
Success begins with a fellow's will-
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are,
You've got to think high to rise,
You've got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the one WHO THINKS HE CAN!

Go Hoyas!

WOMEN WIN ROUND 1 OF PLAYOFFS AGAINST MILTON! The Hoya varsity soccer teams really know how to put on a show. Tonight, like the men's team last night, the Lady Hoyas certainly kept their fans on the edge of their seats. With only 6:15 left in the first half, a foul on Jamie P in the box resulted in a penalty kick. Jamie nailed it low and into the right corner of the net to put the Lady Hoyas on the scoreboard. It was a long second half as the score remained 1-0. However, at the 6:22 minute mark, the Milton Eagles scored their first goal. The second half ended in a tie, 1-1. After 2 5-minute halves, the teams remained at the 1-1 tie, so the the ladies had to fight for a win with penalty kicks. Michele B., Jamie P., and Kelli C. made their goals as did Milton's first three kickers. However, in the fourth round Milton missed, and Erika K.'s beautiful shot was blocked by the Milton goalie. In the fifth and final round, Katherine E. blocked the Milton shot, and Lauren R. made her goal to win the game for Harrison.

MEN WIN ROUND 1 OF PLAYOFFS AGAINST MILTON! The Hoya men played a tough game and while they dominated the first half, half-time found the score at 0-0. Rain made the fields slick, but at 22:22 minute mark of the second half, Alex J. made the only and subsequently, winning goal of the game.

MCEACHERN GAMES! (posted Saturday, March 4, 2006)
Congratulations to our varsity and junior varsity teams in their games against McEachern H. S.

Both varsity games on Friday night were quite physical and competitive. Jesse L. scored a goal off a penalty kick by Kelli C. The kick was set up after a McEachern player was yellow-carded after colliding with Lauren R. In the men's game, Harrison had several opportunities to score, but the one and only goal came with less than 15 minutes left to the game. Kevin Fry made the winning goal with the assist by Eric Cobleigh.

These girls are anxious for a great season! To get them started, they spent a day together to learn how to be a better team. Click here to get a peek at how these ladies square off.

While the ladies were off making war, the men were nice and warm enjoying a dinner, hosted by the Pollocks, and followed with bowling...also inside and warm. Sorry, there's no pictures available since Coach Davenport's new camera wasn't working.
